Jaycees Host STEM Fair at Local School

The Palatine Jaycees, as part of their Adopt-a-School Day program, are hosting a free STEM Fair on October 8th at Jane Addams Elementary School at 1020 East Sayles Drive in Palatine from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM for students and family members from Jane Addams and other surrounding elementary schools.

The Jaycees have partnered with Northern Illinois University to coordinate over 70 activities for children kindergarten through six grades.  These activities promote the concept of STEM which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.

“The STEM fair is a fun way for the entire family to learn about concepts such as energy, waves, light and optics, electricity and much more,” said Chrissy Trilling-Raices, project chair.  “We are delighted to team up with area businesses and colleges to promote STEM in our grade schools. The Jane Addams PTA is even hosting a STEM Assembly on October 6th to get the children excited for the fair.”

Sponsors for the event include Palatine Car-X, Epic Urgent & Family Care, Educational Insights, Shedd Aquarium, Sci-Tech Museum and Harper College.  Free snacks and door prizes will be available to participants.

Adopt-A-School Day (AASD) is a day of service to schools that is initiated and facilitated by the Junior Chamber International (JCI) also known as the Jaycees.  The AASD program works with businesses, organizations and schools to create one day where collaboration, vision and service can make a difference for a school.  Initiated by the Hawaii Jaycees in 2008, JCI USA adopted the program as a National Priority Program in the fall of 2013.

Every year, the Palatine Jaycees conduct numerous programs to serve the community and accumulate funds for operation of the Chapter and community donations.  Included in these projects are the Fourth of July Festival Hometown Fest, Christmas tree sales, Best Pizza Contest and others, which benefit the community directly and help raise money.

The Palatine Chapter of the Jaycees, one of 60 local chapters throughout Illinois, has close to 100 members and is one of the largest chapters in Illinois.  The Jaycees provide individuals between the age of 21 and 40 the opportunity to develop personal and leadership skills while serving their community.

The Palatine Chapter holds their monthly general meeting on the third Thursday of the month at 7:30 PM at the American Legion Hall on Palatine Road in Palatine.  For further information on the Palatine Jaycees, membership or any of their sponsored events visit their web site at www.palatinejaycees.org, email them at info@palatinejaycees.org or call them at 847-604-0288.
